Anton Michelsen (1809–1877) was a prominent Danish goldsmith and jewelry designer who founded the renowned jewelry company A. Michelsen in 1841. His works span classicism, neo-rococo, and national styles such as the Old Norse style and the Christian IV style. Under the leadership of his son, Carl Michelsen (1853–1921), the company became one of Denmark’s leading gold and silversmith workshops, working closely with artists like Harald Slott-Møller and Thorvald Bindesbøll.
In 1848, Michelsen was appointed court and order jeweler and was responsible for producing all Danish medals. His company participated in several international exhibitions, including the first World Exhibition in Paris in 1855.
In 1963, the company was transformed into a joint-stock company and in 1968 became majority-owned by the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory. In 1985, A. Michelsen merged with Georg Jensen A/S.
Today, A. Michelsen is recognized as a symbol of Danish jewelry art and craftsmanship.
